Introduction - Pregel maize starch

Pregelatinized maize starch is mainly valued in pet food and milk replacers

Pregelatinized or “pregel” starches are cold-water soluble starches.
This characteristic allows them to be easily digested by the animal.

They aid the development of viscosity during the manufacturing processes either without cooking or with processing at very low temperatures.

“Pregel” starches are mainly used in the manufacture of feed for pets and as milk replacers for calves.

Description

Pregelatinized starches of the Roquette line are available as a white to slightly yellowish powder.

Pregelatinized maize starch for calf nutrition, aquaculture and pet food

Calf nutrition

Pregelatinized starches are valued in milk replacers for their solubility, a strongly appreciated benefit in the more technical formulae.

They can be incorporated at a rate of 3 to 5 % in milk replacer formulae to increase their viscosity, and thus limit the settling of non soluble elements in the milk replacers formula.

Aquaculture

The high binding power and the high water retention capacity of pregelatinized starches are very favorable for the manufacture of more durable pellets in aqueous solutions.

Incorporated in fish feed at 1 to 5 %, pregel starches increase the durability of fish feed formulations after manufacture (absence of fines) and during distribution (limited disintegration in water).

For the manufacture of moist or semi-moist fish feed (eels), their incorporation allows production of firm feed balls while keeping a good cohesion for several hours, thus limiting feed loss.

Pet Food

Pregelatinized starches are mainly incorporated in the formulation of dry (biscuits) and wet feed and snacks. Their benefits are both nutritional and technological:

Pregel starches are directly digestible and advantageous in processes without cooking or using low temperatures.
Soluble at low temperatures, they promote thickening of the sauce during preparation of wet pet food. The higher viscosity promotes a better firmness of the contents thus keeping the formulation in better suspension prior to and during sterilization cooking.

The starches can also be modified chemically for an improved resistance to manufacturing conditions: temperature, shearing or pH.
