Introduction - Potato soluble: a soluble protein for cattle feed

Potato solubles are greatly appreciated in cattle feedstuffs due to their palatability and their soluble protein and sugar content.

It is of particular interest in the formulation of liquid ruminant feed.

The nitrogen intake supplied in protein form is a supplement to non-protein nitrogen sources (ammonia nitrogen, urea) and acts to stimulate the rumen flora.

Potato solubles are rich in ash (potassium in particular) and in trace elements.

Potato solubles are available as a brown-coloured liquid.

Ruminant compound feed

Potato solubles provide soluble nitrogen in an organic form that is favorable for rumen microflora.

It does not contain any additional nitrogen (ammonia nitrogen, urea) which allow its use in production under official quality labeling.

Solubles may be integrated in ruminant rations:

In liquid form through a liquid compound feed, at concentrations of 10 to 30 % of the liquid feed.
In compound feed in pellet form, up to 3 to 5 %, where it can act as a binder.

Because of the high ash and potassium content, the combination with potassium-rich fodder must be avoided – for example: pasture grass, alfalfa, beetroot, etc.
