Native starches: Pea starch
Depending on whether they are obtained from maize, wheat, potato or pea, native starches present different characteristics according to the size and structures of the starch granules, and depending on their amylose and amylopectin composition.
| | Maize starch | Wheat starch | Potato starch | Pea starch | EURYLON ® (*) | Waxy maize starch |
| Amylose | 25 | 25 | 20 | 35 | 60 | 1 |
| Amylopectin | 75 | 75 | 80 | 65 | 40 | 99 |
(*) High amylose starch
These starches have two main objectives in animal nutrition:
- To be a digestible energy source for animals
- To allow adapting and/or improving the texture of the finished product during pelletization and extrusion processes.
Native starches: Pea starch
Definition
Native starches represent the carbohydrate fraction of the grain or tuber, obtained after the separation of the other components via a wet process extraction. They are composed of starch granules that have not undergone any physical or chemical transformation.
Description
Native starches of the Roquette line are available as a white to slightly yellowish powder.

Pea starch for animal nutrition
Energy sources, milk replacer and premix carriers, ...
 | Roquette offers maize- or wheat-base native starch for the manufacture of milk replacer carriers. It is a good energy source that may partially replace, at a lower cost, lactose and fats in milk replacers for calves. Up to a 10% inclusion rate, the digestibility of native starch in calves is excellent (> 95%). As a purified ingredient, it offers a more stable suspension as well as a better digestibility than wheat flour. |
 | In aquaculture, native starches are of interest in the production of extruded feed. Incorporated at a concentration of 3 to 15% depending, on the formulations, they permit: - To decrease the fines concentration and to improve the stability of the granule
- To adapt the expansion rate of the formula and the liquid absorption
- To control the floating properties of the pellet
The starch is totally gelatinized during extrusion thus becoming very digestible for fish. |
Native starches are mainly incorporated in the formulation of dry feed (or croquettes) and snacks.
Their interest is both nutritional and technological:
Native starches are a source of carbohydrates and therefore of energy, with a high digestibility level thanks to the extrusion process.
They are especially appreciated in hypoallergenic formulations:
- as refined ingredients
- as non-typical ingredients: potato and pea starch
Native starches are used for their capacity to modify and adjust the texture of the finished product. Their inclusion allows a better expansion as well as a better stability of the croquette or snack.
The result will mainly depend on the amylase/amylopectin ratio. For example, a high amylase maize starch, such as EURYLON®, with a short and fast setback texture, will give a harder and crunchy structure. On the opposite, a waxy maize starch will allow an increase of the expansion and will give a more airy texture.
Nutritional and Veterinary specialties
Wheat and maize native starches are excellent premix and nutritional specialties carriers because of:
- their white colour and neutral odour
- their non-hygroscopic properties
- their compatibility with most additives such as trace elements, vitamins, enzymes and antibiotics.
