Introduction - NEOSORB® sorbitol
Obtained by glucose hydrogenation, sorbitol is the best known polyol. It is characterized by its technological and nutritional properties:
Sorbitol has stabilizing and moisture-retention properties that allows decreasing water activity (Aw) of finished products, thus modifying their texture and improving their storage capabilities.
It is used for the manufacture of 'semi-moist-’ or treats-type croquettes; alone or combined with other moisture-retention agents (e.g.: liquid sugars).
From a nutritional point of view, sorbitol stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes and has a detoxifying effect on the liver by increasing the production of bile salts (choleretic and cholagogue effect).
Therefore, sorbitol is particularly indicated to complement the feed of animals raised in an intensive manner:
- Weaning, critical growth phases – All species.
- Gavage and pre-gavage periods – Palmipeds.
- Attenuation of stress reactions – All species.
It is distributed either continuously or as a treatment, through complete feed or nutritional supplements.
- Sorbitol also allows the acceleration of gastric and intestinal transit. In this case it is of particular interest in sow feed, as it limits constipation problems during farrowing.
NEOSORB® sorbitol for pig feed, poultry feed, ruminant feed...
Pig feed
 |
NEOSORB® sorbitol is recommended for fattening pig feeding in the event of breeding problems, stress or growth disturbances.
It is incorporated at a rate of 0.3 to 0.5 % in feed over a period of 8 to 15 days.
NEOSORB® sorbitol is also recommended for sows at a rate of 0.4 to 0.6 % in the feed distributed 15 days before and 15 days after farrowing.
It participates in the detoxification of the body, supports hepatic activity and prevents constipation.
Incorporated at up to 1 to 2% in pre-starter feed, NEOSORB® sorbitol improves the performances and general condition of piglets, ensuring a more effective regulation of glycaemia.

Poultry feed
 |
NEOSORB® sorbitol is especially indicated for poultry for its favourable effect on liver metabolism. It increases the secretion of digestive enzymes and therefore promotes good digestion of feed and avoids fat overload.
The use of NEOSORB® is indicated in fat palmipeds during the pre-gavage or gavage phases.
The mean recommended dose is 0.1 to 0.5% of the ration.
|
Ruminant feed
 |
When sorbitol is distributed by the oral route to ruminants, it is only partially degraded in the rumen. The non-degraded sorbitol fraction arrives in the intestine and stimulates the receptors responsible for increasing the secretion of bile and pancreatic salts.
Sorbitol is also the energy supplement recommended during housing, transport or before the slaughtering of large bovines (AFNOR V 46005 standard).

Calf nutrition
 |
Given that veal calves frequently suffer from hepatic failure, sorbitol is capable of improving growth performances when used at the following doses:
-
0.5 to 0.8 % at the start,
-
0.4 to 0.6 % in the growth and finishing phase.
Used as a treatment, NEOSORB® sorbitol can be added occasionally to the ration at a rate of 5 to 10 g per calf, per day. For this application, sorbitol may be used alone, or incorporated in nutritional speciality products.

Pet food
 |
Sorbitol is a low molecular weight molecule that allows binding the free water of a formulation. For this reason, NEOSORB® sorbitol is used as a water activity (Aw) depressant.
It prolongs the shelf-life and preserves the softness of semi-moist feed for pets.

Nutritional and veterinary speciality product
Sorbitol is an excellent base for the manufacture of nutritional and veterinary speciality products.
NEOSORB® 70/70 is especially indicated in the formulation of liquid supplements for animals. It is a water soluble base, non-crystallizable, appetent and easily miscible with other active principles.
